| Duke Porter, School Mediator |
CM works closely with the New Haven Department of Police Service to bring mediation services to more city residents and help implement community policing.
CM also has developed peer mediation programs in the New Haven Public Schools since 1990 and has worked in other school systems across the state.
Neighborhood Mediation Program
CM’s Neighborhood Program works collaboratively with the New Haven Department of Police Service (NHPD), bringing mediation services to more city residents, implementing community policing, training New Haven Police Academy students and working with neighborhood/police district management teams. Since 1999, CM has had a contract with the NHPD, one of the nation’s leading advocates and examples of community policing. In 2004, we handled cases from every neighborhood in the city and held 445 mediations. Our various mediation programs served 3,255 New Haven area residents, including 2,369 adults and 886 children.
Under the direction of our Youth Coordinator John Jairo Lugo, we also continued our outreach to the Latino community in New Haven. Our pool of bilingual volunteer mediators enables us to conduct mediations entirely in Spanish when necessary.
School/Peer Mediation Programs
CM’s Peer Mediation Program offers mediation and conflict resolution training to school children. CM has developed peer mediation programs in the New Haven Public Schools since 1990 and has worked in other school systems across the state. These programs teach lifelong conflict and communications skills, while building safer, more civil academic environments.
CM’s School Mediation Program provides community mediation services to the Board of Education of the City of New Haven. CM staff and volunteer mediators work at area high schools, with Board of Education staff, especially school-based administrators and Social Development Department personnel, to identify and resolve conflicts involving students to prevent or shorten school suspensions and reduce the need for police involvement in school-based conflicts.
